Bill Murray and the NYC Marathon

People often ask about how serious the Narberth Beer Runners are- do we run fast? are we training? Are we a really serious group of runners?

Bill Murray takes running about as seriously as we do.

Though only a few of us usually wear a tux to our runs.

The next official Narberth Beer Runners run will take place on Wednesday, November 5th, at 6:30.

Tired Hands Wrap Up

Great Run last night in the steamy rain to Tired Hands Brewery  in Ardmore.

This brewery has a very diverse beer list, and a pretty diverse pickle list as well.

They accommodated our group of sweaty runners very well.

NEXT RUN WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5th. Location TBD. Time 6:30, Train station south lot.

Are you a bar or restaurant looking to host our small gathering? Please let us know, we are always looking for places in the greater Narberth region to try!

Tired Hands! Not as far as you think!

Well, its finally happening.

On October 15th, 2014, we'll be running to Tired Hands!

Tired Hands Brewing Company banner image

The forecast is for rain, but we'll be running, rain or shine.

If you live in Narberth, you may think of Tired Hands as way up Lancaster Avenue, but the route we'll take is only 2.65 miles, so it will actually be a shorter run than usual.

But yes, you will need to find your own way back to Narberth. Consider the R5 or just walking or running the few miles back afterwards.

No one likes running along Montgomery or Lancaster Avenues, so we'll wind our way through subdivisions, as shown below.

As usual, meet at the south steps of the Narberth train station. We'll depart at 6:30.

The Stormwater Runoff 5K

There's another great trail run taking place in our area soon- Lower Merion Conservancy's Stormwater Runoff 5K.  This 5K trail run is challenging, but fun, as the course starts at Flat Rock Park and winds through the trails within Rolling Hills Park.

Entry fees support the Lower Merion Conservancy, a local non-profit which promotes conservation, open space and historic preservation as well as education.

When you register for the Stormwater Runoff 5K, you'll also receive a discount code for $5 admission to Pints for the Park, a fundraising event for the Friends of Linwood Park in Ardmore.

The Beer Mile

Before this post goes anywhere, it needs to be made clear that this is not what we do…The Narberth Beer Runners believe in responsible drinking, responsible running and most importantly, drinking QUALITY beer! The Beer Mile includes none of those things.

Now that that's taken care of…After our last run, while enjoying a few drinks at McShea's a few of us started discussing the beer mile.  Basically, you find a track, chug a beer, run a lap and repeat until you reach a mile.

The youtube video of James Neilson demonstrates it pretty clearly, and the article below from Runner's World tells a much better story.

The Untold History of the Beer Mile

With the upcoming inaugural world championships, this sudsy race has officially become a thing.

Beer Miler in Pain

It is April 27th, and James Nielsen assumes his starting position on the track at the College of Marin in Northern California. His wife, Mimi, is filming him with a Flip video camera. She raises her iPhone to the camera, and focuses on the phone's timer. "On your mark, get set..." On "Go!" she starts the timer, and Nielsen springs into action. He cracks open a room-temperature Budweiser–because warm beer retains less carbonation than cold–tilts his head back 45 degrees–an angle he knows through studying fluid dynamics will best usher the brew down his gullet–and seals his lips onto the can. It takes him five seconds to drain the can, three seconds faster than if its contents had been simply poured onto the ground. Then–this is very important–Nielsen starts running and tosses the can in the trash.
The two-time NCAA National Champion in the 5-K runs his first lap very fast. He's dedicated the past year to training and can now run a mile on an empty stomach in 4:10. With a belly full of beer, he figures he can run 4:20, maybe 4:25.

The October 1st Run

Thanks to everyone who came out for the run on October 1st! We decided at the last minute to once again run the boundary of Narberth Borough.  Unlike the last time we tried this route, we actually got it right this time!

We squeezed in to a busy McShea's for few cold beers afterward!  Check back soon for details about our next run, on Wednesday, October 15th, when we run to another location we haven't visited yet!
